Traditionally women are in charge of household, that is wool spinning, knitting, family care and raising livestock. A woman's expression of spirituality and education is limited to within the scope of their homes. Rarely has it ever been possible for women to evolve as spiritual guides.

Although Buddhism has flourished since the 8th century, there has never been a study center for women. They are forced to remain at home. Yet today, thanks to the strong endeavor of some young women, these obstacles are gradually starting to be removed.

Women from the Himalaya region want to become financially independent. They play an important role in both guarding and transmitting their unique culture. Many young and needy women are ready to enter the holy orders, yet have to wait endlessly for new established posts to be available in the convents.

Two convents have been founded in the snow rich Spiti valley in order to meet these needs. The first was erected in 1985 by a group of brave women of the Pangmo village who undertook the construction of Yanghmen Choeling, intended to be both a traditional and a contemporary study center for women.
