Convents In Spiti


Höhle Pangmo The nuns lived originally in a built-in cave on top of the Pangmo village. Being too small and a natural den for scorpions, they had to eventually move out. The new convent was erected not too far down from the cave on flat land. The nuns took the task to build with their own hands lodgings for teachers and classrooms. The labor was very hard and poverty, social obstacles, as well as prejudice were a constant reminder.

In 1995 a second woman's center ( Sherab Choeling) was built about 6 km from Pangmo, in Morang.

Schule These schools are unique, as they tie spirituality with the everyday life of these women and its organization enables the sisters to become financially independent. Courses on Buddhist culture, philosophy, languages, craftwork and health are meant to combine the best of both traditional and modern knowledge. Through hard work and dedication, these women strive to overcome their educational and financial disadvantages. With enhanced training and self awareness, they gain social and spiritual authority amongst their community and contribute significantly in safeguarding their culture, the environment, health and development of their community.

In the distant Himalayan villages, where poverty and illiteracy are a constant hardship, women are now ready to take a leading role. Any financial effort is welcome, as it will enhance spiritual and social upgrading of these women in this poor and culture threatened region.

Kloster (1996) Providing more possibilities for both traditional and modern teachings will enrich the community and transmit a more spiritual and intellectual potential. The progresses recently achieved prove that this dream can be fulfilled.
